These open mics have become a part of my biweekly routine and I’m loving it. Last Saturday I brought my brother’s camera along (I promise I’ll be getting my own one day).
I’ll be highlighting a few of the performers in this post.
First up, enjoy these pictures a friend of mine took.
The energy of the room was tangible. I performed a new poem and got a ton of audience interaction from it. It was so much fun, despite my nervousness.
There were so many amazingly talented people that performed, but to keep this post from being a million pages long, I’ll only mention a few. If you’d like to see more local talent spotlights, comments below!
Now let’s get into some of the real stars of the night. Let’s start off with our Hostest with the Mostest, Mrs. Jeanette Hickman-Brown. She is amazing and honestly the reason I got to open mics in the first place.
Jeanette shared a spoken word poem she wrote for her vows. That weekend commemorated her and her husband’s first year of marriage. It was honestly so beautiful and tears were shed (most of them being my own).
I met Jeanette when I was in high school. She was the guest speaker for our Speak Out Poets Club one week. She literally changed my life. Now, she’s got business cards.
Make sure to check out her out on all platforms @jeanetteandherstages
Next is an artist I hadn’t seen before. Then again, I’ve only been going to these open mics since Late July/ Early August. All this to say, Toni Tata was not at all what I expected.
He’s an improv artist, and a wonderful one at that. This took some serious confidence.
And here’s to one of the most energetic artists I’ve ever seen. This is Not M@nner and as the name applies, he’s not your typical performer.
It was also his birthday this weekend, so make sure to wish him a happy belated.
The Utterance is tomorrow at Common Grounds Coffee Bar at 6 pm. Stop by if you’d like to see me perform in person. The vibe there is amazing. 10/10 would recommend.
Here’s a video of last month’s performance.
And that’s all for this week’s post. This literally took me a month to write but if you want to see more posts along this line, please let me know!
